Ranakpur Jain Temple in Ranakpur, Rajasthan (India) | Driving Holidays in India

“Ranakpur turned to out to be the much needed respite from the maddening crowd of the city of lakes (Udaipur)” wrote fellow Travel Blogger Svetlana on her facebook update for Ranakpur. She was on a family holiday in Rajasthan (Udaipur specifically) and had taken a detour to this small town. Those lines (and the beautiful photographs) got me intrigued. We were in the process of finalizing our family road trip to Rajasthan and Udaipur was one of the destinations. I asked Svetlana about the logistics and she so graciously shared all the details. Udaipur turned out to be a mixed bag of pleasant moments and disappointments; the husband who wasn’t so keen in the beginning of our trip decided to take a detour to Ranakpur (and if possible Kumbhalgarh) on way to Mount Abu, on the last night in Udaipur (mostly to appease me and also to get over the disappointing experience of city of lakes). The visit to Ranakpur turned out to be one of the prettiest drives of our whole trip and the Ranakpur Jain Temple certainly bedazzled us with its serenity and beauty.

Rajasthan Road Trip through Mewar region | Family Driving Holidays in India

A Road Trip is a way for the whole family to spend time together and annoy each other in interesting new places ~ Tom Litchenheld

Winters for our family involves many must do things, chief among them is to take a road trip through one of the sunnier (or warmer if you please) states if our incredibly diverse country India. Since we happen to live in the capital of India – New Delhi, often it means that we choose Rajasthan for our winter road trips.Last year winter, we had driven through Shekhawati region of Rajasthan and since it was a great experience (read here), we again chose  a driving holiday through Rajasthan this year.

We traveled for 8 days in the month of January to the Mewar  region of Rajasthan,  choosing destinations which were both on my and the husband’s travel wish list for a long time (our toddler is 2.5 years old so she doesn’t have any destination preferences yet). It turned out to be a mixed bag of interesting experiences, disappointments and some exciting moments of adrenalin rush. Sharing our Rajasthan family road trip with all readers, hopefully you will find our journey as interesting as we experienced it.

Nawalgarh in Shekhawati, Rajasthan | A portrait of a town of many billionaires

Cities aren’t like people; they live on and on, even though their reason for being where they are has gone down river and out to sea. ~ John Updike

Walking through the dusty, littered narrow streets of Nawalgarh, with more tourists than locals in sight, I felt that this town was a like an elegant but slightly worn off old lady. A lady who had been a stunning beauty in her days and had been loved by her family, but now she was alone, with her faded regal clothes and ornaments which were brilliant in parts but frayed in totality. Nawalgarh was one of the richest towns in terms of the fresco artwork that we visited in shekhawati region, during our winter family road trip to Rajasthan. However, Nawalgarh also left us feeling sad for the town and its stunning havelis & art work.

Sharing a walking tour of Nawalgarh town in Shekhawati, Rajasthan.
