Victoria Memorial is the most renowned building in Kolkata. In fact, it is the iconic face of the city (just like Eiffel Tower is of Paris). A trip to Kolkata in incomplete without visiting Victoria Memorial and can be counted among top 10 must do things when in this city.
Sure enough, during our trip to the city last year, we spent almost half a day at this wonderful and spacious memorial complex.
Victoria Memorial, as the name itself suggests, was built in loving memory of Queen Victoria of England, who was also called by the title of " Empress of India" during British rule of India; it was inaugurated in 1921. Today, it is a fine example of British style architecture and serves as a museum and one of the most visited tourist attraction in the city.
The Memorial is always thronged by crowds when its open and on the day we visited, it was the same. A long line of crowds outside the gates of the memorial greeted us.
It was a hazy day, so the main building was not clearly visible from the entrance gate, however, I managed some nice shots.
There were crowds inside the memorial grounds too, however, since the gardens surrounding it was very spacious, there was space for every one :)
Before I realised, it was almost 2 hours spent clicking pics and admiring the Memorial building, and the beautifully landscaped gardens surrounding it. Time to say ciao!!
But not before, I said hi! to Queen Victoria herself, yeah that's her below, still residing over the empire on which sun never sets!! :)
Victoria Memorial holds special childhood memories for me, as my parents, who are from this city, always used to come with us at least once during our summer holidays. Each time, I left this place with a special image in my mind from this place.
This time too, my day was made when I spotted this dog feeding and caring for her kids in a sweet corner inside the museum!!
So, when in Kolkata don't miss visiting Victoria Memorial and you will definitely leave this place with some wonderful images in your camera and mind.
P.S. ~ If you wanna know what else to do when in this city, read here, here and here.

The wife and I had visited Victoria Memorial when I was posted at Kolkata. We enjoyed the trip.
You have an eye for unfolding of life. The photo of the dog feeding her offspring is a great capture!!!
I visited Kolkata in December and made it a point to go see Victoria Memorial as well. Interestingly, that dog you have pictured had just had her litter around that time. We took more pictures of the newborn pups than we did of the historic building itself!

Wonderful building. The British have a tasteful architectural sense :) How I wish I could be in such places now - I will click away to glory! :) BTW, the Queen is rather fat, don't you think?

Hello, Shooting Star and thank you for coming to The Marmelade Gypsy and leaving such a kind comment. Your blog is lovely and fascinating and I plan to drill down a bit soon. India has always fascinated me -- my father served there during WWII. Your photographs are stunning. Thanks for the beautiful images to savor.
