This is the second destination of my south India Travel, to read about previous destination ,click here.
Kanyakumari is the geographic end of the Indian mainland and one of the most famous religious/spiritual destinations in south India.
There are number of myths and legends associated with this town and the town itself takes its name from 'Kumari Amman' Kanyakumari Temple, located on the shore, is a Shakti Peetha dedicated to a manifestation of Parvati, the virgin goddess who did penance to obtain Lord Shiva's hand in marriage.
The most famous landmarks here are the two rocky islets just off the shore, southeast of the Kumari Amman temple, called the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, built in 1970 (Swami Vivekananda is said to have meditated on this rock for three days. ) and the gigantic 133 feet (41 m) tall statue of Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar.
One of the spectacular things to watch here is the sunrise and sunset, while sunrise can be seen all times of the year, its only between January to March that one can watch sunset.
We opted to watch the sunset (as we couldn't get up early in the morning) and it was a beautiful experience by the seashore!!!
Overall, a lovely day at Kanyakumari, though I did not feel much 'spiritual' visiting Vivekananda rocks, but it was a soul enriching experience watching the sunset!!
And it was time for the next destination!!!

An Indian engineer that I worked with was from southern India; probably near where you went. I don't remember exactly where he was from but he offered to show me around the next time he traveled there but I never got it together to go with him.
Wish I had.
This reminds me of my recent visit to the eastern most tip of India, a place called Kibithoo.
I guess both our motives were the same - to reach the very end of where we are allowed to go. Though you were at the ocean, for me, it was the mountains.
Keep blogging!
And thanks for taking time to comment on my blog.
So beautiful. So serene. Must go one day!

Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a nice comment.
The sea is the Indian Ocean? It's magnificent and sunset is very beautiful. The statue is so tall, the ships look like toys.
Have a nice week ahead!
Spectacular pics. Looks you had a fantastic time.
Beautiful post and a beautiful location. I liked the second sunset with some one peeping through his binaculars. Perhaps tourism and spirituality do not go together!
